The local church exists for a divine and eternal purpose: to worship God, make disciples of Jesus Christ, and reach the world with the life-transforming message of the gospel. These three elements are not separate tasks but are intricately woven together, each flowing from and reinforcing the others.
Worship: The Church’s Highest Calling
At its core, the church exists to worship — not as a weekly ritual, but as a life-defining response to the glory of God. In John 4:24, Jesus declares, “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” This verse is foundational to the church’s identity and mission. It reminds us that true worship is not confined to location or tradition but flows from a deep, Spirit-empowered relationship with God and is grounded in the truth of who He is.
God is seeking worshipers — not merely religious observers, but people whose hearts are fully turned toward Him in love, obedience, and reverence. The church, therefore, exists to cultivate and multiply true worshipers — people who know God, love Him with all their heart, and reflect His glory in the world.
Making Disciples: The Path to Worship
The process of making disciples is central to how the church produces worshipers. A disciple is not just a follower of Christ but someone who is continually being shaped into His image — learning to love what He loves, live how He lived, and worship as He taught. As Jesus commanded in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19–20), the church is to go and “make disciples of all nations,” teaching them to observe all He has commanded.
Discipleship leads to deeper worship because it moves people from knowing about God to knowing Him personally and intimately. Every time someone grows in their faith, turns from sin, or learns to trust God more fully, they become a more authentic worshiper — one who worships in spirit and in truth.
Reaching the World: Extending the Worship of God Globally
The church also exists to reach the world for Christ, not as an end in itself, but so that more people may come to know, love, and worship the true and living God. Missions is not ultimately about people; it is about God’s glory being known and praised among all peoples. As pastor and theologian John Piper has famously said, “Missions exists because worship doesn’t.” The goal of evangelism and global outreach is to bring people into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ, which leads them to become lifelong worshipers.
Every soul that turns to Christ becomes part of the global chorus of worship to God. The local church participates in this by proclaiming the gospel boldly, living as a witness in the community, and sending out workers to the ends of the earth — all so that the name of Jesus would be exalted in every heart, home, and nation.
